Technique Number 3 - Quitting Porn by HACKING THE HABIT LOOP

“The truth is, you don’t break a bad habit; you replace it with a good one.”

Denis Waitley

WHAT DO I DO?

  1. Write down a list of everything which triggers a porn craving in you.
  2. Write down a list of reasons of why you watch porn, the list might include things such as “I feel lonely”, “It helps me reduce my anxiety, stress”, “I feel relaxed” etc.
  3. Write down a list of activities you can do to feel the same rewards as watching porn in the above scenarios.
  4. Next time a craving is triggered, instead of watching porn, do an activity from the list you created in step three.

WHY DO I DO IT?

The “Golden rule of Habit Change” says that the habits are a three-step loop- the cue, the routine, and the reward. You can never truly extinguish bad habits, they never really disappear. To deal with the old habits, you must address the old cravings. You have to keep the same cues and rewards as before but feed the craving by inserting a new routine.”

You are following the “Golden rule of Habit Change” when you first make a list of all your porn triggers, these are the cues. Then, making a list of all the reasons of why you watch porn, these are the rewards that you feel you get when you watch porn. And then, making a list of all the activities you can do which deliver the same rewards as porn does in these scenarios. And finally, doing one of these activities when a porn craving is triggered. You are keeping the same old cues and same old rewards, but you are changing the routine to something which better suits your life goals. For example, every time a porn craving comes when you are stressed, you can get down and do some push-ups instead of watching porn. The push-ups or any physical activity will release Endorphins which relieves stress. It will also stimulate the release of Dopamine which your brain craves for and also norepinephrine and serotonin. These brain chemicals play an important part in regulating your overall mood. So, this technique will wire up your brain to crave for push-ups rather than porn because your brain is after the reward and not the routine.

Porn addiction and Medical Science

“A man who views the world the same at 50 as he did at 20 has wasted 30 years of his life.” Muhammad Ali There’s an old saying in the teaching world: “ Tell them what you’re going to tell them. Then tell them. And then tell them what you told them .” And so, as you move through this blog, you’ll probably notice much repetition of thoughts and ideas, because we usually learn best through repetition. There are few things in this blog which are not scientifically proven yet and when you come across them, you will have two options to choose from. Try those things and prove their effectiveness for yourself. Or, wait until there is scientific proof for their effectiveness before you try them. But be aware, if you go for the second option, you would have to wait for a few decades before the scientific world catches up with the lived experience   of porn addicts. And it would be too late for you.  Always remember that science will always lag behind the lived experience. The case with every new

Porn Addiction As a Three-Part Loop

" We shape our tools and afterward our tools shape us." Marshall McLuhan   The life of a porn addict can be thought of as a three-part loop which he goes through repeatedly.  This loop consists of three phases - the Relapse, the Reboot, and the Retreat. The Relapse or phase one is when he goes back to his old ways of watching porn from a successful streak, the Reboot or phase two is when he is away from porn on a successful streak for any amount of time, and the Retreat or phase three is when the porn cravings hit him hard and he slowly moves back towards phase one or the Relapse. The porn addict behaves differently in each one of these phases.  During phase one when he relapses, he is full of guilt and shame. During this phase, he has every reason to quit porn and every reason why porn is bad for him. He is full of motivation to quit porn and to get his life back on track. He will delete his porn collection, gets porn filters for his phone and PC, decides to exercise, medit

The Golden Key #3 to Quit Porn Addiction - CHOOSING THE RIGHT TECHNIQUE

“Practice does not make perfect. Only perfect practice makes perfect.” Vince Lombardi People wrongly believe that “ Practice makes a man perfect ”, but they never stop to think that it's a half-truth and the reality is that “ Only perfect practice makes a man perfect. '' But in the case of Porn addicts, even that belief does not hold good. Because “ Only perfect practice of the perfect thing makes a man perfect. '' Porn addicts try to quit porn for a few days and relapse, they start again and do the same things they did at the start and fail again. They think that if they practice quitting porn enough times, they will succeed eventually. But alas! that is not the case. To learn juggling, you need to practice. But if you practice the wrong technique, you are heading towards failure. To master juggling, you need to practice the right technique in the right way. If you keep practicing failure, you will learn to fail again and again and again. What I strongly believe is
